Had a fun time attending q&a with dir. Jafar Panahi. Was so caught up in its humor and the ending.
Q: I think what makes this film you is the sense of the comedy. What would you say about the humor in it?
A: some of it is just cultural differences. In some parts I really don’t expect any laughter. Or in east Asia where I thought they should laugh they didn’t laugh at all. Because this humor is embedded in local culture. It’s all part of the culture, you cannot take them out, it ruins the realism. And it’s in this moment you live in the film. The truth is, up until the last 20 mins of the film I want the audience to tolerate the film. In the last 20 minutes without any humor or playfulness, I wanted it hard to bear. I buried the humor in the first half for you. But now when you leave the film, the ending is 100% not ended for you.
Yeah you bet it’s not.
